Theme library
Add ready-made themes, try them without publishing, duplicate, export and import them.
Online Store › Themes shows the Live theme, the one customers see, and the Theme library: saved themes you can edit and publish when they’re ready. If your store uses the Classic layout, customers see no change until you publish a theme.
Add a theme
- Click Add theme.
- In Choose a theme browse the built-in themes and click Use this theme on the one you like: it’s added to your library.
- Click Customize to make it yours and, when it’s ready, publish it.
What you can do with each theme
In the Actions menu of each library theme:
- Publish: makes it the live theme and replaces the previous one, which stays in the library.
- Preview: see it as on your store, without publishing it.
- Rename.
- Duplicate: makes a copy, ideal before big changes.
- Export: downloads the theme as a .json file, as a backup or to take it to another store.
- Remove: deletes it from the library (this can’t be undone).
Import a theme
- Click Import.
- Choose the .json file you exported (from this store or another one).
- The theme lands in the library with “(imported)” in its name: customize or publish it whenever you like.
Switch back to the classic layout
In the live theme’s Actions menu, Switch to classic layout makes your store stop using that theme. The theme stays in your library and you can publish it again anytime.
Tips and common problems
- Export your live theme before a big change: it’s your backup.
- An exported theme keeps the design, sections and their texts; your products, orders and settings don’t travel with it.
- “We couldn’t find that theme”: it was removed from another tab or by someone else on your team.
Publishing replaces the theme your customers see. If you’re not sure, use Preview first.
