AI agents for ecommerce: run your store with Claude or ChatGPT
What it means to connect an AI assistant to your store, what it can and can’t do, prompts you can try today, and how previews and confirmations keep you in control.

An AI agent for ecommerce is an AI assistant, such as Claude or ChatGPT, connected to your store so it can do the work you’d otherwise click through: check today’s orders, create a product, adjust stock, set up a discount or pull a sales report. You ask in plain words; it uses your store’s own tools and shows you what it’s about to change before anything important happens. Shopping Master is built for this through MCP, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to software. Here’s what an agent can do, what to ask it, and how it stays safe.
What MCP is, in plain English
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way for an AI assistant to use another app’s tools. Instead of copying data from your admin into a chat, you connect your store once, sign in and approve access. From then on the assistant can look things up and, when you ask, make changes, following the same rules and permissions as your admin.
That has two practical consequences. The assistant works with your real data rather than a guess, and it can only do what your account is allowed to do: a staff member who connects their assistant gets a staff member’s permissions, not the owner’s.
What an AI agent can do in your store
In Shopping Master, a connected assistant can work across almost the whole admin:
- Daily check-up: what needs attention today, such as orders to ship, payments to check, stock running out and carts to recover.
- Products and catalog: create and edit products with photos (from a link), variants and SEO fields; duplicate, bulk-edit and organize them in categories and collections; moderate reviews.
- Inventory and purchases: stock per location with its history, low-stock alerts, adjustments, and supplier purchases that add stock.
- Orders and drafts: find and fulfill orders (in parts too) with tracking, mark them delivered, record a payment you received offline, cancel without refunding, and create manual and draft orders.
- Returns and abandoned carts: open and track returns, and email shoppers who left a checkout a link back to their cart.
- Customers and subscribers: look up customers, add tags and notes, and assign wholesale price groups.
- Discounts and gift cards: create discount codes and automatic discounts; look up gift cards and email one to its recipient.
- Content: write pages and blog posts, edit menus and publish one of your themes.
- Settings: shipping, payment methods, taxes, your domain, webhooks and staff, as your role allows.
- Reports: sales for any period, split by product (with margin), payment method, category, customer or channel, plus a log of who changed what in your admin.
Prompts to try
Good prompts read like instructions to a capable assistant: specific about what you want, and clear about anything that needs your decision. A few to start with:
- “What do I need to do today in my store?”
- “Ship today’s paid orders and ask me for the tracking numbers.”
- “Create a draft product called Linen shirt at $35 with sizes S–XL.”
- “Compare this week’s sales with last week.”
- “Which products are about to run out, and who is waiting for them?”
- “Set up a 10% code WINTER10 that ends on Sunday.”
Longer tasks work well too, because the assistant can chain several steps and come back to you with the result:
- “Find every active product without a description, draft one for each from its title and details, and show me the drafts before saving anything.”
- “List this week’s abandoned checkouts over $50 and send each one a recovery email.”
- “Give me a weekly review: sales against last week, best sellers, low-stock products and any paid orders older than two days that haven’t shipped.”
In Claude, three tasks also come ready-made in the + menu: Process today’s orders, Launch a new product and Weekly store review.
How it stays safe
Giving software access to your store should come with clear limits. These are Shopping Master’s:
- Reads only read. Tools that look things up are marked read-only and never change anything.
- Changes that matter ask first. Deleting, cancelling, emailing your customers or changing what shoppers see returns a preview of what would happen, and nothing changes until you confirm.
- It never moves money. No refunds, no charges, no issuing gift cards or changing their balances: you do those in your admin. Marking an order paid only records a payment you already received.
- It acts as you. With your role and its permissions, on your store only. It never sees your password or your Stripe credentials.
- You can disconnect it anytime. Settings › AI agents lists every connected app, and changing your password disconnects them all.
- Your chat stays with the AI app. The store data each tool returns goes to the AI app you connected, under that app’s own terms; Shopping Master receives the tool calls, not your conversation.
One habit worth adopting on your side: read the preview. AI assistants can misunderstand a request, and the confirmation step is where you catch “all products” when you meant “this collection.”
How to connect Claude or ChatGPT
Your store’s MCP server address is https://shoppingmaster.app/mcp, also shown with a copy button in Settings › AI agents. In Claude:
- In Claude (web or desktop), open Settings › Connectors and click Add custom connector.
- Name it ShoppingMaster, paste the server address, click Add and then Connect.
- Shopping Master opens: sign in if needed and click Allow.
- In a chat, turn ShoppingMaster on from the + menu and ask away. The connector then works in Claude’s mobile apps too.
ChatGPT connects through its Developer mode, which depends on your ChatGPT plan. Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and any other MCP client can connect with the same address. Clients that can’t sign in, and your own scripts and automations, can use a token you create in Settings › AI agents instead; tokens are part of the Business plan. Step-by-step instructions for each are in the help center: Connect AI agents.
Where an agent helps most, and where it doesn’t
The biggest wins are repetitive admin work and questions that take several screens to answer: morning triage, bulk edits, drafting product descriptions and pages, setting up promotions, and reports. “Which products sold best last month, with their margin?” takes seconds instead of an export and a spreadsheet. It’s especially handy in busy weeks; our Black Friday checklist shows where it fits.
It’s less suited to decisions that need judgment you haven’t shared: pricing strategy, what to say to an upset customer, or anything involving refunds and money, which stays in your hands by design. Treat it like a fast new team member: great at execution, worth checking, and never the one holding the company card.
Signing in from an AI app works on every Shopping Master plan, including Free. Features that belong to a paid plan, such as gift cards or abandoned-cart recovery, still need that plan, and tokens for scripts and automations come with Business (see plans).
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT or Claude manage my online store?
Once connected through MCP, they can do much of the day-to-day work: orders, products, stock, discounts and reports. In Shopping Master, changes that matter ask for your confirmation first, and the assistant never moves money.
Is it safe to connect an AI assistant to my store?
It’s as safe as the limits around it. Shopping Master’s connection acts with your role and permissions, previews important changes before making them, can’t refund or charge anyone, and can be disconnected anytime from Settings › AI agents.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. In Claude you add a connector by pasting an address and signing in. Developers can also use Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code with the same server.
Does it cost extra?
Shopping Master doesn’t charge for the connection. You need an account with the AI app you use, and that app’s own plans and limits apply.
